About JUPEB
What JUPEB is, how it works, subject combinations, grading — and how it compares to alternatives.
Overview
What is JUPEB?
JUPEB stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It is an advanced-level (A’level) programme that enables students to pursue Direct Entry admission into 200 level at Nigerian universities without JAMB.
When was JUPEB founded?
JUPEB was established in 2014.
Types of JUPEB universities
JUPEB operates through:
- Partnership universities — for example UNIBEN, OAU, FUTA, and similar institutions.
- Affiliated universities (lead universities) — for example Adeleke University, Crescent University, and similar affiliates.
Always confirm your target university’s latest Direct Entry brochure — policies change.
Leadership
- First Chairman: Prof. Rahman Bello
- Current Chairman: Prof. Ogundipe Oluwatoyin
- Current Registrar: Prof. Jaiye Ajeyalemi (from Ilesha, Osun State)

Nature of the programme
JUPEB is the final examination for approved diploma/A’level programmes leading to DE. Typical duration is one academic session (about 8–9 months).
Subject combinations
Students usually offer three subjects aligned with their intended course. Examples:
- Medicine: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Accounting: Economics, Government, Business Studies
- Law: Literature, Government, CRS or Sociology
Your centre should guide final combinations against your chosen university.
Acceptance at universities
JUPEB is recognised by many Nigerian universities and may be considered by some institutions abroad depending on their rules.
Universities often cited as exceptions (verify yearly):
- University of Ibadan (UI)
- UNIMED
- ABU Zaria
Do you need to attend university classes?
No. You can prepare through tutorials or approved centres; candidates typically write examinations according to JUPEB arrangements (often hosted in university venues — confirm with your centre).
Can the certificate be used for jobs?
Yes. The JUPEB certificate may be presented where an advanced-level qualification is acceptable to employers.
HND / DLI and Direct Entry
Yes. Many candidates use JUPEB for Direct Entry pathways instead of repeating UTME or relying solely on OND/HND routes — subject to each institution’s DE rules.
Syllabus
Use the current JUPEB syllabus provided through official channels; older syllabus cycles may no longer apply.
Grading system
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A | 5 |
| B | 4 |
| C | 3 |
| D | 2 |
| E | 1 |
| F | 0 |
Continuous Assessment (C.A): up to +1 point where applicable.
Admission without JAMB
Yes. JUPEB supports Direct Entry into 200 level without UTME for eligible candidates.
Courses covered
Subject combinations exist across fields that mirror typical Nigerian university entry streams — your centre maps choices to target courses.
International recognition
Recognition varies by country and institution; always confirm with the foreign school before you apply.
Examination details
- Examination is typically held once a year (often around June — confirm annually).
- Results validity: commonly described as usable for multiple admission cycles — confirm official guidance.
- Certificates are issued after successful completion.
Advantages of JUPEB
- Only three subjects in many combinations
- No JAMB requirement for this pathway
- Flexible subject combinations
- Widely accepted at many Nigerian universities
- Possible consideration abroad where permitted
- Often supports Direct Entry alongside other DE routes
JUPEB vs IJMB
Differences
- JUPEB involves multiple partnering institutions; IJMB is historically centred on ABU.
- JUPEB registration is largely online; IJMB processes can be more manual.
- JUPEB exams are commonly in June; IJMB often around February.
- Exam logistics differ — confirm each programme’s official bulletin.
- JUPEB has broad national uptake in several regions.
Similarities
- Both can qualify candidates toward 200 level via DE (subject to university rules).
- Both typically run about one academic session.
- Both commonly use three subjects.
- Both are A’level-style pathways.
Admission trends (illustrative)
Market chatter sometimes contrasts uptake between programmes (for example higher JUPEB share vs IJMB in some regions). Treat such figures as informal; your outcome depends on grades, choices, and each university’s DE policy.
JUPEB vs Cambridge A’level
- JUPEB is a Nigerian moderated A’level pathway.
- Cambridge qualifications are internationally standardised.
- Cambridge may carry broader global recognition; JUPEB is often more accessible locally.
- Both can support progression where institutions accept them.
Conclusion
JUPEB is a flexible, recognised route toward university admission via Direct Entry without UTME — widely used across Nigeria when paired with careful university choice and preparation.
From ALEVEL HM
To everyone who has completed post-UTME: we wish you well. If you did not meet requirements for your preferred course, do not fall for scams — explore structured A’level pathways instead.
